It also has a collaborative mode, so that two people can work on a project at the same time.

- I heard about QFT (Question Formulation Technique) at the end of the last school year and tried it. The results were promising enough to prompt me to buy the book, Make Just One Change. The book is an invaluable resource, and I reccmmend reading it if you plan to implement the technique. I tried it yesterday with both my regular American lit and my regular British lit classes. Both groups did well with the technique. Today I will introduce it to my AP lit students. I think using the technique will improve their close reading skills immensely. - HIST-SS579, Europe 1914-1945: War and Peace Four class periods per week. Why did Europe become the battleground for two world wars fought within 25 years of each other? This seminar will examine the political, social, and economic conditions in Europe that set the stage for the bloodletting of the first half of the 20th century. The First World War caused the collapse of empires, the death of millions, and a fissure dividing an idealized old Europe and a disconcertingly modern new one. In the 1920s and 1930s the redrawn map of Europe, socialism, fascism, and Nazism all set the stage for the next great conflagration, while the art and literature of those years expressed key cultural shifts. The Second World War brought horrors that resonate to this day: Auschwitz, the siege of Leningrad, Stalin's purges, and the firebombing of Dresden, and the atomic bomb, to name just a few. When the war finally ended it would take a remarkable shift in thinking to reconstruct a war-torn continent.

- Courtney James comes with the highest of recommendations. Over the past two years, Courtney has instructed my daughter in algebra and geometry, and prepared her for the Nevada High School Math Proficiency Exam, and the TMCC Math Accuplacer. Her success in these areas is due to his methods of teaching that take the mystery out of math computation to make it real. Courtney has taken his gifted knowledge and combined it with a supportive learning environment to create a program that instills confidence and success. What more can a parent ask for!

- City Journal is the nation’s premier urban-policy magazine, “the Bible of the new urbanism,” as London’s Daily Telegraph puts it. During the Giuliani Administration, the magazine served as an idea factory as the then-mayor revivified New York City, quickly becoming, in the words of the New York Post, “the place where Rudy gets his ideas.” The Public Interest goes further, calling City Journal “the magazine that saved the city.” But City Journal is a national, not just a local, force, with a readership that spans the U.S.—and an especially enthusiastic audience in the nation’s capital.

- SPARC is a week-long summer camp introducing exceptional high school students to the mathematics necessary to describe intelligent decision-making by both humans and computers. For instance, how do computers play chess? How does your phone correctly detect faces in an image? Can we model human decision-making, and once we do that, can we figure out how to make it better? It turns out that all of these questions can be answered starting from a single powerful mathematical framework, and the same math can be used to identify genetic factors of diseases, improve the quality of digital communications, and model the meanings of words.

- WAYK is a collection of techniques used for rapidly reaching proficiency in a target skill, such as Spanish, volleyball, or old-style fiddling (although to date, WAYK has been used mostly for acquiring languages). More than just a single method, WAYK is a system for using any method that works. The technique collection is constantly growing—every time the community discovers a new trick which allows players to teach and learn faster, it is "contracted" and propogated through the community to allow other players to accelerate their learning even more. - Welcome to your one stop for professional reviews of books. What we've attempted to accomplish here is to collect book reviews from major online media sites that are available without having to register at a site or pay to read them. We're not interested in just a short blurb or small section of someone else's review. We try to find full-length reviews of books that help the reader gather the information they seek to determine if the book is worth their time. We prefer reviews that deal with each book at length, but sometimes settle for smaller reviews when lengthier ones are unavailable. For each book listed here, we try to find at least three reviews on different web sites. This way you can read as many of them as you'd like before deciding on a book. We also write our own book reviews. An Editor's Pick logo is also applied to any book we've read and enjoyed. The lack of this logo for any book usually just means we haven't read the book.

- The Field Book Project: About
- About Field notes are significant sources of information related to scientific discovery. They provide rich data for researchers to understand how biodiversity has changed over time and space. They enhance information associated with specimens by providing details regarding dates, localities (for geo-referencing), and associated event data. For example, field diary entries may describe habitats, meteorological events, personal observations, and emotional declarations. These additional data allow us to assess the intrinsic value of specimens, such as hydrology, geology, co-occurrence, and frequency, appear regularly in these original sources. The Smithsonian field books are “hidden collections” meaning little documentation exists for these resources. Our project’s initial phase focuses on exposing field books at the Smithsonian by creating catalog records with detailed descriptions and location information for these items.

- recommended on Tagmax for early, struggling readers Thought I should pass this along. It's a link to Reading Wings created by Vera Goodman. I was asked to review this sometime back as it was being converted to online and I was extremely impressed. The concept is to train a reading coach who then works with the struggling reader. It's not flashy but is very effective. Anyway, because this comes up now and then, I thought there might be those who could use it. Feel free to email me offlist if you have any questions.

- His passion is computer science and logic. I would like to tell you about a gifted and enthusiastic teacher for kids like my son who has recently started offering classes in many different areas of math and logic. My son has not started working with him yet, but I am looking forward to being able to sign him up for one of the classes offered. I have heard wonderful things about how much the kids who work with him love how he teaches and come away with double the passion for the subject. If you have a child who loves the subjects of math, logic, or computer science, please take a look at Dr. Stoyen's website. His classes are offered online and may be taken by kids anywhere in the world if they have a computer and internet connection. Along with the classes he offers in different areas of math, he coaches kids who are interested in competing in the Olympiads for math, computer science, and computational linguistics. Best Wishes, Jennifer Damashek

The goal of this project is to provide a structure so that youth in out-of-school programs can carry out long-term observations of natural objects with particular attention to the use of drawing and digital cameras. This project uses a qualitative approach, where changes over time are studied, recorded, and discussed. The activities can be used as the experiential base for more in-depth investigations of environmental problems or the more formal study of biological principles. This website provides background information on the following topics: need and rationale, visual representation, long-term observations, space and equipment needs, keeping journals, integrating mathematics, and observing behavior.

Ultimately, the overall goal is a significant increase in student achievement in science and science coursework. The vision of the project is to prepare Missouri's 9th grade science teachers to become intellectual leaders as they learn to teach a yearlong freshman physics course. Leadership skills will be built through research-based professional development (PD) that includes comprehensive physics content, pedagogy, research and evaluation. The project will "

- I just found this site today I wanted to share http://www.education.com/activity/high-school/math/ I run across numerous sites with math activities, but the activities on this link are unique in terms of the fun, hands-on factor, and are clearly described. People often think that b/c kids are in high school, they don't need these kinds of fun, hands on activities. But I've found that they greatly increase interest and enthusiasm in these topics. This program allows students to do real, original, historical research, using both primary and secondary sources, based on any topic of their choosing that fits NHD's annual theme It's a WONDERFUL program; I have done it with my students for four years now and they have done some amazing original research. The NHD program also publishes a wonderful guide to Online Video Lectures and Course Materials — Open Yale Courses I can personally recommend David Blight's civil war course as a great way to supplement any U.S. history study. - The original Wayne's Word articles were published on-line in the format of a quarterly natural history newsletter. The earliest articles were written in a lite (tongue in cheek), humorous and satirical fashion. Subsequent articles became more informative with detailed information, references and images. The monthly articles were dedicated to various natural history topics brought to professor Armstrong by his inquisitive students. During the last decade, Wayne's Word has grown into a large website to supplement professor Armstrong's general biology and botany courses at Palomar College: The website is now called a textbook of natural history. It emphasizes topics in biology and botany, with special emphasis in ecology, adaptations and the economic importance of plants in our daily lives.

- The Biology Corner is a resource site for biology and science teachers. It contains a variety of lessons, quizzes, labs, web quests, and information on science topics. You can find lessons related to biology topics in the links above. Topics include: Ecology, Genetics, Anatomy, Cells, Scientific Method, and Evolution. Quizzes are organized in the same way (by topic) and are all self-grading quizzes so that students can assess their own understanding of topics. Lessons can be found for both freshman (entry) level biology and AP Biology. To see any of the class curriculum use the “classes” link on the top left. Biologycorner is also a kind of “storage” area for past projects, images, and links that help me stay organized. I will eventually add sections for student created projects such as concept maps and cell models.
