So, this prom was started up a few years ago by a mom who thought homeschoolers should get to have a prom as well. I think it started when Chance and Jack were still homeschooling, but they had no interest in attending (Chance could have gone to Logan's prom, but never evinced an interest in that either). However, my youngest is a different story, when friends of his told they were going and asked if he were interested in getting a limo together for a group outing, he said "Yes". He turns 14 by their deadline (barely), and while it is certainly a wholesome event, he had to talk his parents into letting him go, which wasn't too difficult.

First of all, however, was getting our boy a suit, shoes, and other accessories without breaking the bank. Chance had a black jacket left upstairs from his debate days, but it was a tad too long in the arms and too wide in the shoulders, making Luke look like a little boy in his daddy's suit. Not the look he was going for...I was dreading having to buy him a new suit, since he would almost certainly outgrow in a year or so, when Chance suggested trying out his two favorite thrift stores first. He's had good luck in the past finding jackets, and since we had a pair of pants that would work, that is exactly what we did. We brought a navy suit at the 1st place near Bayfair for about 8$ - a little tight, but it would do - but hit the jackpot at the second thrift store. Not only did they have a black jacket that was comfortable and fit properly, they even had a pair of gently worn black shoes that would be perfect. Luke is almost the same show size as Chance, so we were going to borrow a pair of his, but this was better, since the shoes we found were slightly more dressy than Chance's. Yay! We even found a pair of walking shoes for Chance from Timberland for 8$ which made him very happy too. All of the boys need high quality supportive shoes (read: expensive) since they have feet like John. Luke's learned the lesson of buying cheaper shoes like Converse - they look cool, but a few hours of running and jumping = sore feet.
Anyway, Luke already had a new white shirt from working the crab feed for State Exchange, plus a simple grey tie and a white undershirt. He had to borrow a black belt, and then he was set. Mama had to hem his black pants, however, which turned into a bit of an pain. I don't hem pants very often, and I thought I could just fold the pant cuff (which had already been hemmed once for Chance) and re-hem them to Luke's length. Ah, no. The cuff just wouldn't hang correctly, and I ended up cutting off fabric and re-hemming them for the third time once I figured that out. But the pants looked great, it was worth the trouble. Of course Luke spent a lot of time putting the pants and shoes on for measuring, as you can see from the picture below of him on a chair.
The Day Of The Prom: Dad tying the tie on himself before putting it on Luke, getting dressed and making sure everything looked good, and then being nervous for a little while as we waited to head off to his friends' house for the limo pickup.
His friends had some food and we all hung out for a while while we waiting for the limo, which ended up being an Escalade SUV. Honestly, I find limos a little tacky, so I thought the SUV was much preferable, and maybe even a little safer, considering the driver doesn't have to try and maneuver with a longer car.
Group photos, and then the kids were off for a fun night! I haven't seen any notification from the prom people about the pictures being available, but once they are, I will post some more here.
Heading to his friends' house, getting a bite to eat while waiting for the limo, and then taking some group photos before taking off on an adventure!
A better view of the "limo" which is really an Escalade SUV. Very nice and a lot cheaper and less tacky than the usual limo. Much more important to have a driver to take you places without your parents tagging along. We parents all got to talk and get to know each other a bit, but the kids are great and very nice to boot. Luke told me the morning after that he had a very fun time, and the prom itself was lots of dancing with no one sitting on the sidelines waiting to be asked to dance (I had talked to him about being a gentleman and making sure girls weren't sitting out dances because no one would ask them).
