I think Luke has mentioned to some of you that he joined the State Exchange Project this year, but I haven't written up a good blog post about what it is. It is a national 4-H project where kids in one state go and stay with 4-H members in another state for a week in July, and vice versa. Luke will be traveling to Montana this summer to stay for a week with his host family, and then we will host them in the summer of 2020. We are responsible for showing the visitors the Bay Area, which means traveling, museum admission and more, so a huge part of being in the project is the fund-raising. The kids need to raise about 12,000 dollars to host about 12-14 kids for a week. It sounds like a lot, but just going to the Monterey Aquarium is about 35$ a kid, which is already almost 500$ not including money for gas and food. I don't think the Montana kids need to raise quite as much money, since they don't have as many tourist attractions to visit!
Anyway, Luke has already worked a Crab Feed at a Rotary Dinner, had me and John buy some gift cards for Shell Gas, Safeway, Target (we get 1-3% back which isn't a lot per card, but it adds up) and is selling See's Easter Candy (John took it to work for some orders). These pictures show him working at the COntra Costa County 4-H Showmanship Day, which is where kids bring their animals for judging contests, fun activities and other fun things. This is the BBQ lunch table and they ended up making almost 500$, not too bad for a few hours of work. I didn't make the picture collage, this is what the other leader sent me.
John and I took a walk while Luke was working up into the hills nearby (it all took place at the Old Borges Ranch, a nature preserve up near Walnut Creek). We've been getting our normal amount of rain, and it shows in the green hills!
